Six Nevada Republicans Charged Over 2020 Fake Electors Scheme

Six Nevada Republicans have been indicted by a grand jury on charges related to their efforts to undermine Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election by creating a slate of fake pro-Trump electors. Among those indicted is Nevada Republican Party Chair Michael McDonald.

On Wednesday, the office of Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, a Democrat, announced that the six Nevadans charged “were signatories of documents in which they posed as the duly qualified electors for the state of Nevada in an effort to disrupt the results of a free and fair presidential election.”

The six individuals were each charged with offering a false instrument for filing and uttering a forged instrument by submitting fraudulent documents to state and federal officials. The charges carry a maximum of five years in prison.

In November, Politico reported that Ford’s office had quietly opened an investigation into the matter.

Nevada is not the only state dealing with the fallout of the fake electors scheme. Earlier on Wednesday, 10 Republicans sued in Wisconsin’s civil court for participating in a similar scheme settled the lawsuit against them, and admitted that their actions had been “part of an attempt to improperly overturn the 2020 presidential election results.”
More dominoes could soon fall. As Rolling Stone reported in August, Arizona prosecutors have been “moving aggressively” in an investigation of the state’s self-appointed pro-Trump electors, including former state Republican party chairwoman Kelli Ward. As the 2024 election approaches and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump continues to make baseless allegations of election fraud, prosecutors in critical swing states are making clear that attempts to meddle with the democratic process will be met with the full force of the law.
