Six people were killed in a high-speed collision that involved two vehicles on State Road 7 west of Delray Beach on Thursday night, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.

Investigators say a 17-year-old male from Wellington was driving a BMW north in the 14000 block of State Road 7 "at a high rate of speed" shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday when the teen rear-ended a Nissan Rogue SUV.

The collision caused the Nissan to overturn, with the vehicle coming to a final stop upside down in the center median. Five of the Nissan's occupants died at the scene while another died at Delray Medical Center, PBSO said. The 17-year-old had minor injuries.

Investigators said the teen may have been under the influence of either alcohol or drugs. The Palm Beach Post is not disclosing the teen's name because he is a juvenile.

Investigators did not release the names, ages or places of residence for those who died. A PBSO crash report listed an unidentified female as the Nissan's driver and listed three unidentified females and an unidentified male as the passengers,

Information about the other two passengers was not immediately available, a PBSO spokesperson said Friday morning.

The area bounded by State Road 7, Jog Road, Atlantic Avenue and 10th Avenue North in Palm Beach County has been the site of numerous deadly accidents.

During a two-month stretch in late 2019 and early 2020, eight fatal accidents occurred in that area.

Thursday night's accident was one of the worst in recent years in South Florida:

  • In August 2021, four people were killed following a two-vehicle crash Palm Beach Gardens when a teen ran a red light driving north on Beeline Highway struck another car that was turning left onto the highway from PGA Boulevard.

  • In May 2021, five people, including three teenagers, were killed when a speeding car flipped and crashed on top of another near the Boca Del Mar development west of Boca Raton. Five other people, all ages 12 to 14, were injured, one of them critically.

  • In March 2015, eight were killed and 10 others injured in a van crash near Moore Haven. The 18 people were returning to Fort Pierce from a Palm Sunday service in Fort Myers when the van that was heading east on State Road 78 went through a stop sign, crossed U.S. 27 and went down an embankment, plunging through tall grass into a canal.

This is a developing story. Check back for more details.
