On a bloody night in Baltimore, three killed and six others injured in a string of shootings
Three people are dead, and six more wounded, after a series of shootings in Baltimore Wednesday evening through Thursday morning, police say.
Dozens of shots rang out on a street corner in Broadway East just after sunset, leaving a woman dead and five others injured. By the time the sun rose, two people had been shot inside a home a few blocks away — one of them fatally — and a 16-year-old boy had been shot and killed on the other side of the city.
The bloody ten-hour stretch began at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, when police were called to the intersection of North Patterson Park Avenue and East Preston Street, near the southeast corner of Collington Square Park in Broadway East.
An estimated 30 bullets were unleashed on the street corner, where police found two women — 38 and 34-years-old — and two men — 29 and 23-years-old. Medical personnel pronounced the 38-year-old woman dead. Moments later, two more men — 18 and 30-years-old walked into a local hospital seeking medical treatment for gunshot wounds. They too, were shot on the street corner, police say.
More than 50 orange evidence markers dotted the sidewalk and street at the scene, with residents gathering on the fringes. Deputy Commissioner Sheree Briscoe visited the scene.
One of the residents, Craig Williams, 42, said he was traveling through the area when the shots rang out.
“If I got here 10 seconds later, I would’ve been hit,” he said. Williams lamented that it seemed like much of the violence was being driven by young kids. He said there should be a stronger police presence in troubled neighborhoods, and that he hopes to move back to his native Virginia.
Police tracked a vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting to a rear alley in the 1600 block of E. 25th St., in Darley Park, where it was abandoned.
Later Wednesday, at approximately 11:22 p.m., Southwest District patrol officers were dispatched to the 700 block of N. Edgewood St. in the Edgewood neighborhood to investigate a reported shooting, police said in a news release. Responding officers located a 16-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds.
Medics were summoned and pronounced the victim dead at the scene, police said.
Just before 4 a.m. Thursday, Baltimore Police officers responded to a report of a shooting inside a home in the 1700 block of Milton Ave. in Broadway East.
There, they found two victims: a 26-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her chest, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 29-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his head, who was taken to the hospital and is listed in grave condition.
