Six pets perish in Conowingo house fire

Dec. 6—Five cats and one dog perished in a house fire in Conowingo, Cecil County, early Monday. A sixth cat was transported for medical treatment, fire officials said.

The fire was discovered by a neighbor shortly after 5 a.m. in the 100 block of Rock Spring Road, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. It took 50 firefighters from the Water Witch Fire Company and other responding units an hour to control the blaze.

The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in structural damage to the one-story home and another $50,000 in damages to its contents, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The residents, who were not home when the fire occurred, have been displaced and are being assisted by their insurance company, Alkire said.
