Six Teaneck convenience stores charged with selling vapes to minors

Six Teaneck convenience stores have been cited by the township for allegedly selling vape products to minors after an undercover operation, the police department said Monday.

The police statement accuses two stores on Cedar Lane: Rocklin's and Best Stop; three on Teaneck Road: Teaneck City Center, Exxon Gas Station and $0.99 Treasure; and one on Queen Anne Road: Mr. RJ Convenience of selling flavored vapes to people under the age of 21.

The owners of the six stores have been charged with maintaining a nuisance and a petty disorderly persons offense, sale of flavored vapor products, both a violation of state law as well as nuisances, a municipal offense.

The sting operation visited a total of 13 stores around the township, each of which was provided with "reference materials in order to educate them about the law, in an effort to ensure compliance going forward," Chief Andrew McGurr said.

The six business owners charged are set to appear in Municipal Court on May 10.

Teen vaping reached all-time highs in 2019 when more than one quarter of high school students used nicotine-delivering devices, according to the National Youth Tobacco Survey.

The 2022 survey showed 14.1% of high school students and 3.3% of middle school students vaped at least once over the past 30 days.
