Six week's most exciting releases in Ukrainian cinemas

Ukrainians looking for a respite from war will have their choice of new films at Ukrainian cinemas this month as six Ukrainian films premiered on July 27.

As most moviegoers have already had the opportunity to catch Oppenheimer and Barbie on the big screen, these new releases will have a real chance to make a breakthrough at the box office.

Here are the six films to check out.

Titina by Kajsa Næss

This animated film is based on the true story of an adventure at the North Pole. The story begins in Rome, where Italian engineer Umberto Nobile meets a funny little dog named Titina. Together they go through adventures as they are build an airship destined to travel to Antarctica on behalf of Roald Amundsen himself.

Titina will cross the glaciers, swim with the whales, and discover mankind's edge of the unknown.

The Quiet Girl by Colm Bairéad

The film made in Irish – a language at risk of fading away – became the first-ever Irish film to be nominated for the Best International Feature Oscar.

It is a coming-of-age drama telling the coming-of-age story of a 9-year-old silent girl named Cáit. She spends a summer with her distant relatives on a remote farm in the scenic Irish countryside. Here she experiences loving home for the first time, while also discovering a gloomy family secret.

Haunted Mansion by Justin Simien

Walt Disney rarely attempts to make a horror movie – even if it is actually a comedy. Haunted Mansion is the exception to the rule.

Together with her son, single mother Gabbie moves into an old, beautiful mansion. But what seemed like an attractive offer turns into a living hell: the house is haunted with aggressive ghosts. A paranormal researcher, priest, history professor, and a psychic come to the woman's aid.

The film stars LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jared Leto.

A Nappy Man by Tristan Séguéla

A Nappy Man is a French comedy about a crisis in a provincial bourgeois family.

A man desperately tries to secure his position as a mayor of a small town in Northern France, but his wife of 40 years poses a problem. Despite having three children with the spouse she still loves, in her heart – she has always been a man. Now, she is determined to transition. What future awaits these two and will they even remain together? The answers are not easy to find.

Cobweb by Samuel Bodin

One more complicated family story, but this time in the horror format.

To say that 12-year-old Peter feels himself uncomfortable at home is not saying much Every night, he hears eerie sounds behind the wall, but his parents gaslight him by telling him its all in his head. But the doctors don’t agree. Slowly, he begins to understand that his parents have a secret. Maybe, they are not who they seem.

Sympathy for the Devil by Yuval Adler

Sympathy for the Devil is a psychological thriller starring Nicolas Cage in a typical late career role as a "not-really-a-thief" in a velvet jacket.

An ordinary, blue-collar worker, 40+ stranger hijacks him in his car at gunpoint. The obviously drunk thief doesn’t want to listen about a pregnant wife who is about to deliver a child. The ride is full of screams, dead bodies, and mystery. The main point is unclear: what does this man want? What hides in the past of an ordinary, blue-collar worker?
