Skateboarder hit and killed in Longmont crash

Aug. 5—A skateboarder was killed early Wednesday morning when he was hit by a 21-year-old driving a vehicle on Third Avenue.

Longmont Public Safety spokesperson Robin Ericson said police were called to the crash at 1:27 a.m. Wednesday on Third Avenue between Lashley and Alpine streets.

Police believe the driver, a 21-year-old man from Longmont, was driving westbound on Third Avenue when he struck a 22-year-old man on a skateboard.

The skateboarder was not in a designated intersection or in a crosswalk, and it has not been determined at this time which direction he was traveling. Police believe the skateboarder was in the left lane for westbound traffic when he was struck.

The Boulder County Coroner's Office has not yet publicly identified the skateboarder, but Longmont police said he was visiting from out of state.

Ericson said several factors are under investigation, including the speed of the vehicle and possible drug or alcohol impairment by both parties.

At this time, no charges have been announced.
