Skateboarding dad passes passion on to kickflipping kids

Not only does Darren Harper love to skateboard, he loves helping his daughters land tricks of their own.

See the video above on how Darren’s skateboarding methods help his daughter’s land tricks.

Harper’s daughters Demi Harper, 6, and Dakota “Tink” Harper, 10, take after their dad. Trying to land new tricks is a normal weekend for the trio.

Tink has been skating for the last two years, while Demi started about a year ago.

Harper films his daughters’ progression and new tricks they’re working on. They like to set a goal for the day and plan how they’ll work to achieve it. Harper says Tink is a fast learner and when asked if she could kickflip down a ledge, Tink said she was willing to try.

Demi wanted to try the trick too after seeing her big sister give it a go.

“She said, ‘daddy I want to try it,’” Harper said. “I was scared at first but I figured if I spotted her like I normally do she’d perhaps get it. Demi is fearless. So then they both went for it nailing their tricks.”

The video caught the eye of professional skateboarder Tony Hawk. He posted the clip to his Instagram saying, “My dad was always supportive of my skating growing up (even through injuries) but Darren Harper is next level with his catch-and-release technique.”

“I’m thinking maybe he seen the post and it struck a nerve. That daddy-daughter nerve,” Harper said. “When we saw that Tony Hawk reposted the clip I was speechless but I also figured, ‘we about to touch the world.’”
