HARBOR SPRINGS — A man died after suffering a head injury at The Highlands at Harbor Springs resort on Friday, Feb. 23.

The Highlands' director of communications Erin Ernst said ski patrol was contacted about the incident at about 8:42 p.m. on Friday. The incident occurred on expert-rated terrain.

"The Highlands’ ski patrol was called to assist an injured adult male skier in an area with expert-rated terrain," Ernst said via email. "Members of the ski patrol assisted the skier, administering first aid and CPR, and continued to assist in an ambulance transfer to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital."

Emmet County Sheriff Pete Wallin said his department assisted in the response by helping move the man off the sled into an ambulance and assisted with CPR. Wallin confirmed the fatality and said the skier had hit their head.

According to Ernst, the man was not wearing a helmet when ski patrol arrived to assist.

Ernst added that the resort "does not identify persons who are injured nor share information about injuries sustained at the resort due to concerns for patient and family confidentiality."
