Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, or so the experts tell us. If you look up Skillet Café and Skillet (Café) Too, you’ll note that Google lists them as “breakfast restaurants,” but as regular customers know, there is so much more on each menu.
At Skillet Café in Phelan and Skillet Too in Midtown Square Shopping Center in Hesperia, many customers know the menus by heart.
The service is friendly both places with server Donna and chef Sinfro in Phelan, and Kelly taking orders and serving the meals in Hesperia.
The Phelan location opened in August 1995 and set the bar high for heaping plates of hearty food, flavorful and filling, served with the best coffee in town.
Owner Carylon Evans opened Skillet Too in 2006. Today, both locations are thriving, with some specials available only at each location.
Phelan’s specialties are bottomless mimosas available daily. Skillet Too offers killer avocado toast with two eggs and tomato slices, a feast for the eyes as well as the tummy.
More Dining Around:
Let’s start with breakfast
Regardless of how you enjoy your breakfast, both Skillet locations can fill your requests to your utmost satisfaction.
If you’re the “poached egg, unbuttered wheat toast with unsweetened hot tea” type, both locations welcome the challenge.
And if a hearty skillet breakfast is more your style — choices range from Country Skillet with scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, and covered with country gravy to the Taco Skillet with scrambled eggs, ground beef, sour cream avocado, tomatoes and cheese or Cornbeef Hash or the Western Skillet, which still leaves four other skillet options — each served with hash browns, your choice of toast, biscuit and country gravy or two small pancakes (or home fries upon request), the Skillets are up to that challenge as well.
The biscuits are homemade, by the way, as are the cinnamon rolls that are a big favorite served as Cinnamon Roll French Toast, also available as a combo with two eggs and four strips of bacon or sausages.
We mentioned above that if you have a particular favorite breakfast dish, the Skillet restaurants may already have it on their menu. Uncle Jay’s Giant Potato Pancakes are absolutely winners, with a combination of hash browns, ham, eggs onions and bell peppers smothered with that delicious country gravy.
If you have never tried potato pancakes, this will be a delicious “first.” According to the happy little skillet icon beside it on the menu, this dish is a customer favorite.
How about lunch?
“Homemade” is a key word for lunch choices as well, with coleslaw and potato salad topping the favorites. The soups are always homemade, with a cup or a bowl of “soup of the day” or their fabulous chili, served with onions and cheese, a real treat any day. The soup comes with a garden salad and crackers.
Burgers are handmade from fresh ground beef — no pre-frozen patties, ever — with specialty burgers like the Baja Burger with Ortega chilies and more. “Hot off the grill” melts are served with your choice of cheese and bread and include a grilled cheese double decker and Chicken Supreme Melt with Swiss cheese and bacon.
Fried chicken is always popular, and the chicken tenders are great, too.
Every salad is made even more special by the fresh-made House recipe croutons.
Choices include a large side salad that could be a meal in itself, especially served with Texas toast to original chef, classic cob, chicken Caesar or grilled chicken breast.
Fish and chips used to be a Friday-only option, but now you can order it every day.
Seniors and kids
Seniors 55 and older have their own breakfast and lunch options at the Skillets, and kids 10 and under also get to make their breakfast and lunch choices from a menu of their own.
And now, dessert
If you have a sweet tooth, you won't go without something sweet to finish your meal. Ice cream — one scoop or two — or an apple tart with ice cream are two choices. Cinnamon rolls or homemade biscuits are also on the menu.
