The skinny on Deerfield's 'skinny house'

DEERFIELD — It's one thing to like your home so much that you just want to wrap your arms around it, it's another to actually be able to do so.

The owner of Deerfield's famous "skinny house" or "pie house" can literally grab three sides of the house at one time.

How's that possible?

One side of the house is only three feet in width but fans out to 20 feet in width at the opposite end.

The oddity went viral on social media platforms and has been featured in media outlets around the country.

A Google map bird's eye view of the property at 970 Chestnut Street shows the 1,600-square-feet house was built to fit the triangle-shaped 3,920-square-feet lot, and interior pictures show the house is actually bigger than it looks.

The two-story home features a furnished basement. At the narrow end of the home on the main floor is a powder room and at the wider end is the kitchen. The primary bedroom, bathroom, laundry and walk-in closet is on the second level and the second bedroom and another bathroom is in the basement.

Built in 2003, the home sold last year for $295,000.

The home's location is likely just as much responsible, it not more, for its nearly $300,000 price tag than its odd shape.

Deerfield, a north shore suburb in Lake County with population of about 19,000 people, is one Illinois' wealthiest communities with a median household income of $143,729.

The community also is one of the safest in the nation according to neighborhoodscout.com crime data and boasts one of the best high schools in he country. According to US News and World Report's listing of best high schools, Deerfield High School is ranked the 14th in the state and 379th in the nation.
