Skip the Folk Festival and check out these events in Newport County this weekend

It's a headliner kind of weekend in Newport with the 2023 Newport Folk Festival returning to Fort Adams, but that doesn't mean there's nothing else to do in the area.

For those who like a quieter scene The Newport Show returns or you can take a guided wildflower walk. If you're looking for a little more excitement you can also cheer on some of your favorite police officers in a friendly softball showdown in Tiverton.

And if music is your thing but the crowds at Fort Adams aren't don't worry, there's a pair of free community concerts ready to rock Newport County.

The Newport Show

The Newport Show returns on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days at the St. George's School Ice Rink, 375 Purgatory Road, Middletown.

The not-to-be-missed opportunity for fine art and fashion aficionados serves as the main fundraiser for its two beneficiaries, the Newport Historical Society and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County, and has cumulatively raised more than $3 million dollars since its beginning. Tickets for one day are $15 or $20 for a weekend pass.

A gala preview party will also be held Friday from 6-9 p.m. at St. George's. Tickets range in price.

Tiverton Night Out

The Tiverton Police Department, with support from the Tiverton Recreation Commission, is holding a series of charity-driven softball games throughout the day. Among the scheduled battles, the Tiverton Police Department will be seeking to defend its home turf against the police officers of the Portsmouth Police Department in a winner-take-all game.

Games start at 2 p.m. at the Bulgarmarsh Recreational Area, with the final game scheduled for 7 p.m.

Complimentary hamburgers and hotdogs will be served from 2-5 p.m. and from 5-8 p.m. carnival fun for kids including an inflatable obstacle course, crafts and activities. Food trucks will also be present

Wildflower walk

Join local naturalist and University of Rhode Island Master Gardener Susanna Williams at the Norman Bird Sanctuary during a free morning walk where you will learn to identify wildflowers that are seasonally in bloom at the Norman Bird Sanctuary.

Enjoy strolling along the trails, exploring blossoming gardens, and meandering through meadows. Please dress accordingly for terrain and weather.

NIMFest concerts return this year to King Park in Newport.
NIMFest concerts return this year to King Park in Newport.

Head over to King Park for this weekend's NimFest concert featuring Ryan Lee Crosby and Mel & the Unruly Roots. The concert take place from 3-6 p.m. and guests are welcome to bring chairs and blankets to layout in the park.

If you're looking double up on concerts or avoid the Folk Festival crowds in Newport, Jamestown will be hosting blues band Cee Cee & the Riders from 6:30-8 p.m. in the East Ferry Memorial Square.
