Skipping breakfast is worse than having a second breakfast

Guilty of having breakfast at home and then grabbing a mid-morning snack once you get to work? Not to worry. You may actually be helping your body more than your colleague who skipped breakfast all together.

A new study out of Yale and the University of Connecticut has found that skipping breakfast is worse than doubling up on the morning meal.

“Concerns that a second breakfast at school increases risk of excessive weight gain are unsupported. Students who regularly consumed breakfasts at school, including double breakfast eaters, were more likely to exhibit a healthy weight trajectory.”

The study followed 600 school-aged kids over the course of three years, tracking their weight to see if there was a difference between kids who skipped breakfast, kids who ate breakfast at home and kids who ate breakfast both at school and at home. They found that those who skipped the meal entirely were more likely to be overweight.

“Results from the longitudinal analyses revealed that there was an increased odds of overweight/obesity among frequent skippers compared with double breakfast eaters,” the study reveals.

While the study is focused on kids and the notion that school breakfasts are healthy – no fried eggs and pancakes – it does fall in line with the long held saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
