'Skullduggery': The RBG health watch, and voter suppression in Georgia
New York Times chief Washington correspondent Carl Hulse and Yahoo News Senior Political Correspondent Jon Ward join Michael Isikoff and Daniel Klaidman on the latest episode of the "Skullduggery" podcast.
In view of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's most recent cancer scare, Hulse discussed what would happen if Ginsburg couldn't fulfill her duties on the court. And "she's not the only old person on the Supreme Court, by the way," Hulse pointed out.
With Republicans in control of the White House and the Senate, and no filibuster to empower the Democratic minority, he noted that President Trump and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would control the process of replacing any justice.
"Well, the problem for the Democrats is pretty clear," Hulse said. "They have no power over this anymore. It's all gone. This has become a purely partisan exercise. One party can do this on its own. So if McConnell has the Republicans in line, not much the Democrats can do to stop it."
He also predicted that such a vacancy would be an explosive development across the 2020 election landscape.
"The one thing I can guarantee you guys, is that if this happened next year, it would blow up the election. It would blow up the Senate elections, blow up the presidential elections," he said.
