Skulls on the Plaza? Fear not

Oct. 28—According to traditional beliefs, spirits thought to exist on another plane return to the world of the living for one day — Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead — each year to visit family members. The family honors and celebrates their late kin in festive gatherings. You'll likely see brightly colored masks, decorative skulls, traditional costumes, and marigolds at the inaugural Día de Muertos this weekend on the Plaza.

Friday's offerings include performances by Milagro Mariachi, a youth mariachi group from Santa Fe Public Schools, as well as Las Flores del Valle, Mariachi Tenampa, and Carlos Medina Conjunto and an official welcome from the Mexican consul for Albuquerque, Norma Ang, and Santa Fe Mayor Pro Tem Signe Lindell. Saturday's activities include a serenade by strolling mariachis, free face painting, performances by the Teatro Paraguas orchestra and dancers, a screening of the Disney film Coco, a glow-in-the-dark parade, and a Latinx dance party.
