ER Physician Dr. Travis Stork reports that condom use has dropped to just 10 percent among seniors, and there’s been a corresponding 52 percent increase in syphilis among people 65 and older, and chlamydia is up 30 percent. “That is us at our best and at our worst, I guess,” comments Plastic Surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon. “I’m seeing a lot of worst!” replies Breast Surgeon Dr. Kristi Funk.
Dr. Ordon points out that women in this age group no longer need to worry about pregnancy, so it’s tempting to skip the condoms – but STDs know no age limits.

“Just because you’re retired and a little older is not a reason to let your guard down and not practice safe sex,” concludes Dr. Ordon. “Some STDs can be life-threatening,” adds Dr. Stork.
