Slapfish swims into Fishers with dual concept

Slapfish is opening in Fishers with a duo personality – a fast-casual counter service seafood shop during the day, and a full-service restaurant at night.

The shop, which has its grand opening Saturday at Fishers District,  is the latest from owners Mark and Lauren Weghorst, operators of the only Midwest locations of the California-based chain.

The menu will include oysters, lobster rolls, chowder fries, power bowls, and lobster and crab grilled cheese all day. At dinner time though, the menu is expanded to include steak, pastas and seafood towers.

At 11547 Yard Street, Suite 820, it’s the third Slapfish restaurant for the couple.

Chef Andrew Gruel founded Slapfish as a food truck in 2011 before opening a store in California.

The Weghorsts opened a Slapfish restaurant inside of Noblesville grocer Broccoli Bill’s in July 2019, then the one at 345 Massachusetts Ave. in Indianapolis a year later.

They opened Raw Bar by Slapfish, a Peruvian-style raw fish and oyster bar adjoined to Slapfish on Mass Ave. in 2021.

The Weghorsts, along with silent partners,  joined Slapfish as a franchisee to serve those craving a seafood option somewhere between white tablecloth service and fast food; and the company has come to rely on Mark Weghorst for testing products and systems.

The Fishers Slapfish will be the first in the company to have elements of Raw Bar.  A full bar will serve beer, wine and cocktails.

“It’ll be a slightly different venue at night,” said Mark Weghorst. “People at night for dinner enjoy having a server and having cocktails.”

Like the Indianapolis location of Raw Bar, the Slapfish in Fishers will have a piano and feature live music on weekends and special dates.

“On the weekend, having fun with the piano being played is kind of a super romantic type of environment we're trying to create,” Weghorst said.

It will be family friendly though, with a kids' menu and brunch available on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Fishers Slapfish will serve lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Between 4-9 p.m., there will be full service for dinner guests. The restaurant will operate seven days a week.

The grand opening will kick off at 11 a.m. Saturday with a lobster roll giveaway for the first 100 customers and continue with live music and entertainment through 1 p.m.

After the grand opening event on Saturday, neighbor Peace Water Winery will provide complimentary wine samples from 6-8 p.m.
