Sleater finishes career in style to lead 2021-22 All-WNC swim teams

The Citizen Times has released the All-WNC boys and girls swim team for the 2022 season. Asheville School finished their season as boys state champions and runners-up for the girls, excelling in relays. Their stand-out performances helped them earn top billing in the all-WNC teams this year. A West Henderson diver placed fourth in the championships, the best in the area.

2021-22 All-WNC Boys Swimming Team

Patrick Sleater, Asheville School

Last year, Sleater broke the 200 freestyle record . This year, he bested his own time and once again won the NCISAA Division II state title with a time of 1:39.31. He was also part of Asheville School's 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams which also won state championships. In addition, the senior placed second in the 100 backstroke with at time of 51.94. This marks Sleater's third year in a row as the all-WNC Swimmer of the Year before he heads to North Carolina.

Luke Borgmann, Franklin, senior: In the 3A West Regional, Borgmann was part of Franklin's first place 200 freestyle relay team, which finished fourth in the state meet. He also took eighth in the state championship in the 100 butterfly.

Jackson Duchesne, West Henderson, senior: The senior placed fourth in the Class 3A 1-meter diving championships.

Isaac Fishman, Asheville School, senior: Fishman improved his finish in the 50 freestyle from last year, earning an NCISAA Division II state title with a time of 21.57. He also improved his 100 freestyle performance, landing in second, and was part of the Blues' first-place 200 freestyle relay team.

Peter Shores, Asheville School, junior: Shores earned three second place finished in the championships: 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and the 200 medley relay.

Harrison Thorsen, Asheville School, junior: Thorsen was part of the first-place 200 and 400 freestyle relays and earned first in the 100 butterfly with at time of 51.15.

Tucker Valliere, Asheville School, junior: Valliere was part of the team's winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams and earned a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke and third in 200 individual medley.

2021-22 All-WNC Girls Swimming Team

Ginny Thorsen, Asheville School

The 2021-22 All-WNC girls swimmer of the year, Thorsen earned first place in four events during the NCISAA Division II state championships in February. She won two individual events in the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 24.38 and 53.35. The sophomore also swam the anchor leg of two winning relays, the 200 medley relay (1:58.08) and 400 freestyle relay (3:50.34).

Lily Fender, Mountain Heritage, sophomore: Fender earned a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke and fourth place in the 200 freestyle at the NCHSAA 1A/2A championships. She improved her time in the 200 freestyle nearly four seconds from regionals, ending the championship with a time of 2:00.92.

Ava Kilpatrick, West Henderson, senior: Earning first in the 100 freestyle in the West Regional, the senior ended her high school career in the NCHSAA Class 3A championships with a fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle.

Leila Kirkconnell, Asheville School, sophomore: Individually, she finished second in the 100 butterfly race and was part of a first place finish with the Blues in the 200 medley relay.

Ava Mack, Asheville School, junior: Earning first place as part of the championship relay team on the 200 medley and 400 freestyle, Mack also earned first place in the 100 backstroke and third place in the 200 individual medley.

Mallory Ray, Asheville Christian Academy, sophomore: Ray earned first place in the NCISAA Division II championship 200 and 500 freestyles, improving her place and time in the 500 from last year.

Abigail Smith, Asheville School, sophomore: Smith placed second in her individual races in the championships, the 200 and 500 freestyles, and was part of Asheville School's first place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay wins.

Taylor Goodwin, Roberson, freshman: The top 500 freestyle time in WNC was Goodwin's 5:07.56 at the 4A Regional, and she also had the region's fastest 100 butterfly (1:01.31). She was competitive in the shorter freestyle events as well, posting a 25.35 in the 50 freestyle, a 56.00 in the 100 freestyle and a 1:56.55 in the 200 freestyle.
