SLED investigating inmate death in York County: Sheriff

YORK COUNTY, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – A SLED investigation is underway following an inmate death in York County, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Staff discovered an unnamed 40-year-old man who was incarcerated at the York County Detention Center suffering medical distress around 6:30 p.m., according to the sheriff’s report. The inmate was tended to and was transported by EMS to an area medical center where he was later pronounced dead around 9 p.m.

The inmate had been at the detention center since December of 2023 on crime charges out of Virginia.

SLED is involved in the investigation.
