Slice of Heaven Bakery & Coffee, Caribou Coffee news, a look at inflation in central Wisconsin

Happy Tuesday and welcome to the Streetwise Newsletter!

Have you tried any treats from Slice of Heaven Bakery & Coffee in Rome? Rebecca LaCount had been renting kitchen space at Opportunity Development Centers in Wisconsin Rapids, and her baked goods were sold at Milkweed Market and Out of the Box Coffee House, but now, you can find all your favorite goodies at her new bakery. Slice of Heaven Bakery & Coffee opened in August at 1158 Snow Pass in Rome.

Opening the bakery was literally a dream come true for LaCount, too. She had been baking treats in Janesville to thank people for donating money for her children to go on mission trips when she had a dream that she had opened her own bakery called "Slice of Heaven," filled with her grandmother's things. Now, that dream is a reality that honors her grandmother's memory.

Many readers have been asking all summer about Caribou Coffee in Stevens Point. A spokesperson told me the new Caribou Cabin is scheduled to open Aug. 29 at 151 Division St. N. in Stevens Point. The company has not yet announced an opening date for the new location in Wisconsin Rapids.

Our summer intern, Emalyn Muzzy took a look at inflation in central Wisconsin, as well. She asked people how inflation has affected them, and one woman told her she stopped eating three meals a day. With food prices rising, she started eating less, sometimes just one meal a day, so she could keep her children and grandchildren fed. Food pantries have seen more people coming for food over the last two months, and small businesses and restaurants are struggling with rising costs for food. The owners of Brian & Wendy's Hiawatha in Junction City had to decide to raise prices on their menu or lower their profits. So far, they lowered their profits so they wouldn't burden their customers.

I've also collected a few updates from local businesses in Wisconsin Rapids. Dairy Queen raised more than $10,000 for Children's Miracle Network on Miracle Treat Day. Spirit Halloween is now open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at 2211 Eighth St. S. in Wisconsin Rapids. Rejuvenate with Yoga moved to a new studio at 521 Eighth St. S., and Crystal Rock Healing opened at the end of July at 4551 Eighth St. S., Suite 105.

Online retailer River City Supply Co. opened a storefront at the end of July at 101 W. Riverview Expressway, Suite 111 in Wisconsin Rapids, offering a variety of clothing, shoes, home goods and more. House of Glam will move to its new home next month at 710 E. Grand Ave., and the Subway in Pittsville will close Aug. 30 at 8226 Jackson St.
