Slimmer sacrificial cattle as inflation hits Pakistan

STORY: Ahmed said prices have doubled due to inflation and that he could not afford to buy the famed cattle breed ‘Chand Bail’ - known for its large size and massive crescent shaped horns - this year when he went to market nearly six to seven months ago. Instead, the barn owner settled on another breed that cost him less and had to compromise on a lower weight.

Pakistan is experiencing record-high inflation and an economic slowdown compounded by devastating floods last year.

Pakistan has been grappling with fiscal imbalances and critically low levels of reserves that barely cover a month of imports.

Ahmed says rearing the cattle costs him three times more than before, while transport costs to bring them home nearly doubled.

The three-day festival of Eid al-Adha will be celebrated from June 29 in Pakistan this year.
