San Luis Obispo County added more than 600 new COVID-19 cases since Wednesday as the number of hospitalizations nearly doubled, according to data from the SLO County Public Health Department.

Public Health reported 17 people were receiving treatment for severe COVID-19 in local hospitals on Wednesday. That’s an 88% increase from last week’s hospitalization numbers.

Of those, two patients are being treated in local intensive care units.

Meanwhile, deaths attributed to COVID continue.

“We are sad to report that two more SLO County residents have died from COVID-19, both in the last two weeks of July, ranging in age from their 70s to their 90s,” the Public Health Department said in a Facebook post.

Locally, 537 people have died from the coronavirus.

Public Health reported a total of 622 new infections during the last seven days ending Wednesday. These numbers are an undercount, health officials said.

The COVID-19 numbers reported by Public Health only include positive PCR tests recorded at doctor’s offices or public health clinics and not positive at-home or rapid test results, Public Health said.

Here’s how local coronavirus case numbers from the past week break down day by day:

Thursday: 168 Friday: 207 Saturday: 48 Sunday: 50 Monday: 57 Tuesday: 46 Wednesday: 46

The increase in reported cases, particularly on Thursday and Friday, drove up the two-week average to 87. Last week, the case average was 74.

The number of active cases now stands at 490. In the past two weeks, the number of active COVID-19 cases in the county ranged from a low of 473 to a high of 655.

In total, 61,966 San Luis Obispo County residents have tested positive for COVID since March 2020.

The agency on Aug. 10 released data showing that unvaccinated people account for about 62% of COVID-19 cases, 72% of hospitalizations and 64% of deaths since June 15.

Over the past week, these are the top coronavirus cases by location: 160 in Paso Robles, 90 in Atascadero and 69 in Arroyo Grande.
