SLO County vegetation fire burns 35 acres east of Highway 1

A North Coast vegetation fire was contained after burning about 30 acres on Monday afternoon.

The fire started just after noon on Monday in the area north of Cayucos along Highway 1, Cal Fire Battalion Chief David Fowler said. The northwest winds caused the fire to burn toward the southeast.

“It’s primarily rolling hills with grass as the main fuel type,” Fowler said.

San Luis Obispo County Cal Fire units responded to the blaze, with inmate fire crews, helicopter and air tankers all working on tackling the fire.

“There were some structures out in front of the fire but the crews were able to contain the fire before that impacted the structures,” Fowler said.

Fowler estimated around 2:30 p.m. that the fire crews will still be working for four to five more hours.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.
