SLO sends out message to shut down rumors about cause of fires
The three fires that sparked in San Luis Obispo on Monday were unrelated, the Fire Department said Tuesday, sending out a message to end speculation about a possible link.
The department posted on social media that the two nearby fires that sparked near Cal Poly were not related to the Lizzie Fire, which burned 100 acres on the hills behind the high school and was 35% contained as of Tuesday afternoon.
“We are aware of several rumors related to the Lizzie Fire in San Luis Obispo,” the agency said. “We can confirm that two nearby fires yesterday are unrelated to the Lizzie Fire, but the cause of all fires remains under active investigation.”
An evacuation warning remained in effect for residents south of Lizzie Street, east of Fixlini Street and north of Bishop Street, due to the forecasted weather conditions in the area.
The Lizzie Fire began around 2:45 p.m. Monday. Two more fires sparked near Cal Poly around 4:45 p.m.
One fire burned behind the Crop Science Unit on the edge of campus near Highway 1 and Stenner Creek Road, while the other was located between the Cal Poly lemon orchard and Mustang Village, Cal Poly spokesperson Matt Lazier told The Tribune.
No further details on the causes of the fires are available at this time, the department said.
