Slotkin up by 38 points in Michigan Senate Democratic primary: Survey

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) is leading the field of Democratic candidates for Michigan’s open Senate seat, up 38 points over her closest competitor in the party.

A new Public Policy Polling survey of likely Democratic primary voters in the state found Slotkin with 50 percent support in a hypothetical primary, followed by actor Hill Harper with 12 percent.

Two other Democrats got just 3 percent support or less each — while a notable 34 percent of respondents were still undecided.

In a hypothetical head-to-head match-up with just Slotkin and Harper, they earned 56 and 14 percent support, respectively, with another 31 percent undecided. The poll noted this as an “overwhelming lead.”

Slotkin, a third-term House lawmaker, launched her Senate campaign shortly after Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D) announced last year that she wouldn’t run for reelection in 2024.

She’s up against political newcomer Harper, who exited his role on the ABC series “The Good Doctor” to run for the seat.

Former state Rep. Leslie Love and businessman Nasser Beydoun are also in the Democratic primary, though Slotkin has been considered the favorite to win the party’s nod later this year.

Nearly 6 in 10 respondents in the poll said they had a favorable opinion of Slotkin, compared with just 18 percent who said the same of Harper — though almost three-quarters of respondents said they weren’t sure what their opinion of the actor was.

Conducted Dec. 28-29 among 549 likely Democratic primary voters, the Public Policy Polling survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.
