Slovak president permits nine citizens to enlist in Ukrainian military

Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová has allowed nine Slovak citizens to join the Ukrainian army, the Slovak news agency TASR reported on Aug. 5, referring to Communications Department Director for of the President's Office Jozef Matěj.

"From Feb. 24, 2022, to Aug. 2, 2023, the President of the Slovak Republic issued a total of 35 decrees, nine of which permit and 26 do not permit military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine," Matěj said.

In Slovakia, foreign military service must be authorized by the country's president according to the law on military duty. Applications are submitted to local departments, and they are to be commented on by the Ministries of Defense, Internal Affairs, and Foreign Affairs.

On July 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Slovakia and met with his Slovak counterpart.

At a briefing, Zelenskyy said that he had discussed defense and foreign policy cooperation indetail with Čaputová and thanked Slovakia for its defense support, including its provision to Ukraine of missile defense systems and aircraft.
