Sluggish spring stays locked in Newfoundland, threat for weekend snow
Despite surpassing the unofficial kick-off to summer already, things have been feeling anything but summer-like across much of Newfoundland. Spring for the island is usually a bit slow to get going, but this year, much of this season has sat well below seasonal.
Only a select couple of locations have reached 20°C so far this year, but with St. John's, Gander, and some of the larger population areas still yet to reach that marker. Now as we enter the final weekend of May, and colder air funnels in from northern Canada, there's a four letter word to be aware of, and it's certainly not heat!
"Places like Deer Lake, Gander, Buchans, Badger and surrounding areas have the chance to see some flakes flying in the air this weekend, and some may even accumulate a little bit of snow," says Matt Grinter, a meteorologist at The Weather Network. "Up to 15 cm of snow is possible in the hardest hit areas, but that will stay confined to the mountain tops like Gros Morne."

Seeing snow at this time of year isn't out of the question for the region. In fact, back on June 3, 1994, Deer Lake recorded 10.8 cm. The latest snowfall for the area occurred on June 21, 1956 when 1.3 cm fell.
Accumulating snow will also hit Labrador on Sunday, but that isn't as rare.
"Believe it or not, back in 1991, Happy-Valley Goose Bay celebrated Canada Day with 0.4 cm of snow, their latest snowfall on record," Grinter adds.
