Slumping Texas Tech hosts TCU in matinee

The Texas Tech volleyball team will try to snap a five-match losing streak when the Red Raiders host TCU at 1 p.m. Saturday at United Supermarkets Arena.

Tech (14-9, 3-7 in the Big 12) has lost seven of its past eight matches, dropping to a tie for sixth place in the conference standings. During the rough stretch, the Red Raiders have lost twice apiece to nationally ranked Texas and Baylor. The 11th-ranked Bears beat Tech 25-17, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23 on Wednesday in Lubbock.

TCU (11-10, 6-5) beat Tech in four sets in the first round of conference play on Oct. 8 in Fort Worth.

Tech's kills leaders are Kenna Sauer with 332, Reagan Cooper with 216 and Brooke Kanas with 180. Other category leaders include Reese Rhodes with 767 assists, Maddie Correa with 282 digs and Karrington Jones and Kanas with 82 blocks apiece.

WBU football

Wayland Baptist will try to play spoiler when the Pioneers visit Sooner Athletic Conference contender Ottawa University of Arizona for a game at 8 p.m. CDT Saturday in Surprise, Arizona.

Wayland (2-6, 2-5) has lost four games in a row and all three of its road games this season. No. 22 Ottawa (5-2, 5-2) is unbeaten in three home games this season. Texas Wesleyan (7-2, 6-2) leads the SAC by one-half game over Ottawa, Arizona Christian (6-2, 5-2) and Langston (6-2, 5-2).

Wayland is coming off a 30-0 home loss last week to Southwestern Assemblies of God, the fourth consecutive game the Pioneers have lost by at least 20 points.

Willie Phillips and Jacoby Hunt lead Wayland in rushing with 258 and 243 yards, respectively. Kamron Williams has caught 18 passes for team highs of 348 yards and four touchdowns.

The Pioneers' defensive leaders include linebacker Casey Buck (56 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 3 1/2 sacks), linebacker Andrew Villa (42 tackles, five TFL, three sacks) and defensive lineman Gabriel Tito (39 tackles, 10 TFL, five sacks).

LCU cross country

Lubbock Christian University teams will compete in the Lone Star Conference championships Saturday at River Creek Golf Course in Wichita Falls.

The men are scheduled to run the 8-kilometer course starting at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women's 6-kilometer race at 10:30 a.m.

SPC women's basketball

LEVELLAND — Celia Sumbane had 15 points and nine rebounds and three teammates joined her in double-digit scoring as No. 8 South Plains College opened the season Thursday night with a 95-49 home victory against Coastal Bend College.

Dabria Blackwell, a freshman from Brownfield's state-championship team, scored 13 points and gathered 12 rebounds. The Lady Texans got 12 points from Matilda Soderlund, 10 from Jennifer Silva and nine from Sundown product McKenzie Lee.

South Plains hosts Dodge City (Kan.) Community College at 2 p.m. Saturday and Blinn College at 5 p.m. Monday.

Tech women's tennis

SAN DIEGO — The Temple doubles team of Maiko Uchijima and Jamie Wei beat Texas Tech's Metka Komac and Cristina Tiglea 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (2) in the round of 16 at the ITA national fall championships.

Komac and Tiglea won in the round of 32, beating California's Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8).

Komac, a junior from Slovenia, and Tiglea, a sophomore from Italy, were the first Tech women's doubles team to make the ITA fall nationals since 2017. They earned an at-large bid after finishing second at the ITA Texas regionals.
