SM Entertainment announces 3 new groups to debut in 2023

K-pop agency SM Entertainment has announced its plans to launch three new groups in 2023.

In a video titled "SM 3.0: NEW IP 2023," CEO Jang Cheol-hyuk shares details about the upcoming groups, including the final sub-group of NCT, a new boy group and a new girl group.

Expected to be the final NCT sub-group and long speculated to be called NCT Tokyo, it will have a focus on Japanese members. Jang expressed the agency's intention to collaborate with Japanese media companies, sharing the selection process of unrevealed trainees and members' debut journeys.

Jang offered a sneak peek clip of two rookie members from the upcoming group, showcasing their dance skills and revealing their Korean and Japanese nationalities.

Additionally, he revealed other trainees for the NCT sub-group would be chosen through a “pre-debut reality show.” Rookie member Shohei, who was previously announced for the group, will no longer be joining due to health reasons.

As for SM’s new boy group, its lineup will include former NCT members Sungchan and Shotaro, whose departures from the group were abruptly announced on Tuesday.

Joining them will be two SM rookie members: Eunseok and Seunghan.

Meanwhile, SM’s new girl group is slated to debut sometime in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Jang mentions that trainees introduced in the March 2023 showcase will be part of the group, although specific details regarding the chosen trainees were not provided. They will be the first new SM girl group since aespa's debut in 2020.
