This small Brunswick County town is getting a Dollar General. Here's what you need to know

Despite two other nearby locations, a new Dollar General is under construction along Old Ocean Highway in Bolivia.

The store will be located within the town limits of Bolivia, near Galloway Road and a short distance from the Brunswick County Government Complex.

Rhetson Companies Inc. is the commercial real estate developer behind the project. Headquartered in West End, North Carolina, the development, construction and investment company serves national brands such as Dunkin’, Ace Hardware, Jersey Mike’s, Bojangles, Advance Auto Parts and more.

The incoming Dollar General is the company’s latest Brunswick County development.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Bolivia extends less than three-quarters of a mile, but its extraterritorial jurisdiction extends farther. According to 2020 census data, fewer than 200 people live within the town limits.

Bolivia is the county seat of Brunswick County, with many residents from across the county working, visiting and conducting business at the government complex, courthouse and sheriff’s office located on one campus just down Old Ocean Highway from the incoming store.

There are two other nearby Dollar General stores with Bolivia addresses. Less than 10 miles from the to-be-constructed store sits a Dollar General at 2780 Midway Road SE. Another Dollar General is located at 1745 Southport Supply Road, some 12 miles away from the Old Ocean Highway location and just 5 miles from the Midway Road store.

The chain also operates stores across Brunswick County in Shallotte, Southport, Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, Holden Beach, Calabash and more, as well as locations across New Hanover and Pender counties.

The Midway Road location is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., while the Southport Supply Road location closes at 9 p.m. daily.

The new location looks to offer access to groceries, toiletries and other goods for Bolivia residents, courthouse staff and other patrons who might otherwise need to drive to one of the other two locations or as far as the Walmart in either Leland or Shallotte – some 20 minutes away.

Construction on the store is ongoing and not expected to impact traffic along the busy Old Ocean Highway. Dollar General is currently hiring staff for the new location on Old Ocean Highway. Interested individuals can apply on Dollar General’s website.
