Small plane fatally crashes at Concord intersection

CONCORD, Calif. (KRON) – One person was killed when a small plane crashed in a Concord intersection around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, officials have confirmed. The crash occurred at the intersection of Concord Avenue and Diamond Boulevard, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said.

There is no official word on how many people were on board the plane when it crashed. ConFire initially stated that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. However, additional information released by the agency indicated that one other vehicle was involved.

The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, ConFire said.

The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

The Pleasant Hill Police Department is asking people to avoid the area of Concord Avenue at Contra Costa Boulevard. Westbound and eastbound lanes of Concord Avenue will be closed from Contra Costa Boulevard to Meridian Park Boulevard for an extended period, police said.

Officials advise alternate routes.

The plane that crashed was a Vans RV-6, according to Con Fire. According to the Van’s Aircraft website, the RV-6 is an experimental kit airplane.

The FAA issued a statement about the crash, saying:

“A single-engine Vans RV-6 crashed at Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, Calif., around 10:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, Jan. 30. Only the pilot was on board. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide any updates.”

Earlier this month, another single-engine experimental kit plane crashed in the ocean off Half Moon Bay.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
