Small plane from Grand Prairie flight school makes emergency landing on Arlington road

A small plane made an emergency landing straight out an action movie in Arlington on Monday when the pilot put the aircraft down on Timberlake Drive, according to police.

Details about the landing reminiscent of that one scene from the 2005 Nicolas Cage movie “Lord of War” (though the aircraft in this case was small single-propeller plane that landed on a paved road in Arlington) were posted on social media around 2:50 p.m. by police, who anticlimactically announced it as a “traffic alert.”

In the posts, Arlington police said the two people aboard the plane had already deboarded on their own by the time officers arrived. Nobody had any serious injuries.

Other than the plane striking a chain-link fence in the area as it landed, there wasn’t any property damage reported, either. Images made by WFAA-TV at the scene showed the aircraft with damage to its nose, wings and body.

Police said Timberlake Drive between Park Row Drive and Pioneer Parkway would be closed for several hours, advising drivers to take Great Southwest Parkway to navigate around the area.

Police didn’t share any details on what happened leading up to the pilot to make a 2003 action film “S.W.A.T.” style landing. Unlike in that movie, there is no indication that Jeremy Renner was there to meet the pilot after the aircraft was landed.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have both been notified and will investigate what caused the plane to make the emergency landing. NTSB records do not indicate the plane has been involved in any other emergency incidents.

FAA records indicate the plane is a 1997 single-engine Cessna owned by a flight school in Grand Prairie. No information about the pilot or who was on board was available Monday afternoon.
