Small wildfire in Poudre Canyon leads to temporary evacuation order Sunday

UPDATE, 3:56 p.m. Monday: The fire burning up the Poudre Canyon, now dubbed the Arrowhead Fire, is now 95% contained, the U.S. Forest Service said Monday afternoon.

In a tweet the Canyon Lakes Ranger District, officials said firefighters would continue to work the fire Tuesday.

ORIGINAL STORY: A small wildfire burning near the U.S. Forest Service's Arrowhead Lodge visitor center in the Poudre Canyon led Larimer County emergency managers to call a temporary voluntary evacuation order in the area Sunday afternoon.

The fire, first reported by the Larimer County Office of Emergency Management at 2:06 p.m. Sunday, was burning 7-8 acres with "moderate growth potential," according to a tweet by the forest service's Canyon Lakes Ranger District. The fire was still estimated at 7 acres shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday.

Later Sunday, emergency managers lifted the voluntary evacuation order and the road closure associated with the fire, which was listed as 80% contained by Monday morning.

The lodge is 34 miles west of Ted's Place along Colorado Highway 14, also called the Poudre Canyon Highway. Firefighters closed the highway between the lodge and Rustic, about 2 miles to the east, for a few hours Sunday afternoon before escorting traffic along the highway and later reopening it.

A Red Cross evacuation center was established at Cache la Poudre Middle School in Laporte, but was closed Sunday evening. Emergency responders named the blaze the Arrowhead Fire.
