Smaller counties received much less in coronavirus relief, state audit shows

In March 2020, the state of California received billions in federal coronavirus relief, but some counties received much less money per person than larger counties, according to a state audit. About $15.3 billion of CARES funding was allocated for California. Of that, $5.8 billion was sent directly to counties and cities with populations over 500,000, while the rest went to the state. However, even though the state’s 16 largest counties were already given money directly, the California Finance Department also directed half of the remaining dollars sent to the state to those large counties.
