Smell smoke in the air in Raleigh today? Here’s where it’s coming from.

North and Northwest Raleigh residents may be noticing the smell of smoke in the air today.

This is because a prescribed (or controlled) burn is taking place today at Umstead State Park, said NC Forest Service public information officer Philip Jackson.

The operation is for 65 acres and will wrap up Friday, he said.

Thankfully, there’s no threat to air quality, said National Weather Service Raleigh meteorologist Aaron Swiggett.

A wildfire occurring in New Bern at Croatan National Forest also will not impact Triangle air conditions, Swiggett said.

What is a prescribed burn?

These are contolled, pre-planned fires to manage vegetation, according to the National Park Service.

“In most parks, management-ignited prescribed fires are used instead of lightning-caused fires to manage vegetation. Prescribed burns have been ignited to reduce hazardous fuel loads near developed areas, manage landscapes, restore natural woodlands, and for research purposes,” per NPS.
