Smiles In The Sun: Arthur Sears Playground reopens after fire
ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) — A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at Arthur Sears Park on Ambler Avenue, where the playground that had been lost to a fire more than a year ago was reopened.

It was a dark morning on January 13, 2023, when children awoke to find their beloved playground at Arthur Sears Park had been burnt to a smoldering crisp, but city officials acted fast to put a plan in motion to correct this wrong.

Shortly after the fire, city officials invited the community to a public engagement forum in March 2023 to choose a plan to rebuild the old playground. That plan has come to life after a year and a total of more than $277,000.
“This playground is an inclusive structure complete with A.D.A. swing sets, artificial turf, A.D.A. accessible ramps, A.D.A. accessible gliders, and sensory play panels,” said Abilene Mayor Weldon Hurt.
Children were elated when they finally got to test the new equipment, with parents sharing in excitement. Alexis Flores is one of those parents, and she was pleased with the outcome of the new playground.
“I’m just really glad that they have made the park into a really good park. That way, kids can enjoy it and not have vandalism and bad words on it,” Flores said.
Crystal Negrete is another parent who attended the ribbon cutting with her children. She highlighted the convenience of one of the park’s new features.
“We’re absolutely excited. It’s more friendly and family-convenient even for the little ones with the turf area, and I think they did a really good job,” Negrete said.
Citizens of Abilene can look forward to more improvements like these coming soon to parks all across the city, as the Parks Master Plan was recently approved in February.
