Smith slams 72 as West indies scores 171-7

MIRPUR, Bangladesh (AP) — Opener Dwayne Smith hit 72 off 43 balls as the defending champion West Indies scored 171-7 against Bangladesh in the World Twenty20 on Tuesday.

Smith smashed 10 fours and three sixes in in a 97-run opening stand with Chris Gayle, 48 off 48. Gayle was overshadowed by Smith, but opened up later to hit three fours and two sixes.

West Indies, after a meek opening loss to India, must win to stay in contention for the semifinals.

Gayle was the third man out on 151 in the 19th over, but the team lost four wickets in the last over trying to force the pace, as fast bowler Al-Amin Hossain took 3-2 in the over.
