Smithsburg mass shooting victims identified: Here's what we know

Another mass shooting occurred in the United States on Thursday, this time at a manufacturing plant just outside of Smithsburg, Maryland.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office announced that three people were killed in the incident at Columbia Machine, while at least three others were injured. The suspect and a Maryland State Police trooper were among the injured after an exchange of gunfire.

Later Thursday evening, Washington County Sheriff Doug Mullendore identified the three people killed and one of the people wounded. The deceased were identified as:

  • Mark Alan Frey, 50

  • Charles Edward Minnick Jr., 31

  • Joshua Robert Wallace, 30

He said Brandon Chase Michael, 42, was wounded.

The suspect was a 23-year-old man from West Virginia. His name and condition were not released Thursday night because charges had not yet been filed. The wounded state trooper was taken to Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown and was doing well, Mullendore said.
