  1. The National Weather Service says a blizzard warning has been issued for Suffolk County, with wind gusts up to 60 mph and heavy snow causing whiteout conditions in the forecast for Saturday. Governor Kathy Hochul declared a State of Emergency and warns everyone to stay off the roads. Long Island is expected to be one of the hardest-hit areas in the state, and it could get between 10 to 16 inches of snow, according to Governor Hochul. (Patch)

  2. Congratulations to the Spelling Bee Champions at Smithtown Middle Schools! According to the Patch, after 19 rounds inside the library at Accompsett Middle School on Tuesday, sixth-grader Jordan Rosenzweig proved victorious, with seventh-grader Sameha Vundecode as the runner-up. Congratulations to the winners! (Smithtown Patch)

  3. Suffolk County SPCA urges the public to pay close attention to pets during the winter. "Keep your pets indoors during freezing temperatures and winter storms. If left unattended outdoors they can get frostbite or become disorientated and freeze to death. Always remember a fresh water source is vital to sustaining life. Always bang the hood of your car before starting the engine. It is very common for cats to seek shelter and the warmth of an engine. Always wipe your pets feet and undercarriage thoroughly as to avoid rock salt, antifreeze, or other toxic chemicals ingestion." (smithtownmatters.com)

  4. Suffolk Health Commissioner Gregson H. Pigott spoke last week at a teleconference organized by Long Island Metro Business Action based in Ronkonkoma. “Even though Omicron has peaked” in Suffolk County—the rate of COVID-19 positive in people tested here was 28.1% on Jan. 3 lowering to 13.95% on Jan. 19, he said, “we are still not out of the woods. We have to be very careful.” (smithtownmatters.com)
