Smithville homeowner shot after confronting men tampering with truck parked outside

A Smithville man called police early Monday morning to report he had just been shot after confronting two men tampering with his pickup truck parked outside his residence.

The man sustained two gunshot wounds to the back that appeared non-life threatening, according to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The victim was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment after the 4 a.m. incident, which happened in the 7000 block of South Walnut Street.

"When the victim opened his back door to confront the subjects he was shot," the news release said.

The homeowner knew the men found outside his home and was able to describe them, the release said. Officers used a drone to search the area from above, and located one suspect nearby, who was taken into custody on preliminary charges..

Gary K. Robertson, 51, whose address is in the 3100 block of South Rogers Street in Bloomington, was booked into the Monroe County Jail at 4:40 a.m. Monday on initial charges of possession of methamphetamine and resisting law enforcement.

The drone recorded video of the man who "appeared to be trespassing and concealing himself behind multiple properties in the 7600 Block of South Fairfax Road," the news release states. "The subject briefly attempted to flee from deputies before being confronted by a sheriff’s office K9 and additional deputies."

The investigation, and search for the second suspect, continues.
