Smithville students host Foreign Language Club cooking contest
The Smithville High School Foreign Language Club held its annual cooking contest Feb. 5 in the school cafeteria with over 30 people participating.
Each student or group of students selected an authentic ethnic recipe and prepared it at home. Then they brought their entries to the contest for judging. This year’s judges were Jerri Lynn Baxstrom, Janet Broda, Karin Mueller and Claudia Horner.
A total of 17 dishes were judged on presentation, flavor and aroma, texture and authenticity/difficulty of the recipe. Prizes were given to winners in both world cultures: German and Hispanic/Latino.
Winners in the categories were:
German Dishes:
Appetizer: Eric Lehman and Jacob Johns with soft pretzels and dip
Main Dish: Emmogene Moore with Sauerbraten
Dessert: Ethan Numer with German Almond Horns
Hispanic Dishes:
Appetizer: Kaitlyn Carr and Kenzie Gasser with Potato Wedges and Roasted Garlic Dip
Main Dish: Cait and Tessa Daniels with Mexican Street Tacos
Dessert: Charly Bridges and Annebelle Gatten with Tres Leches cake
Club advisers are Lisa Howie and Joni Reichenbach.
