Smoke and Ash Plumes High Into the Air From Sakurajima Volcano

A spectacular ash cloud plumed kilometres into the sky from Sakurajima in Kagoshima, Japan, as the active volcano erupted on December 24.

Sakurajima is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes and has erupted several times this year. The ash was reported to have reached a height of 2,700 metres above the crater in the latest eruption.

A warning has been in place for people to stay away from the volcano since February 2016. Credit: hidekiookurano via Storyful
