Smoke Billows as Wildfire Burns in Southern Spain

More than 3,000 people were evacuated from their homes in Malaga, Spain, after a wildfire broke out in the Sierra de Mijas mountains on July 15.

This footage uploaded to Twitter by Alberto Garcia on July 16 shows flames and clouds of smoke rising from the mountains. “A hell that gets worse,” Garcia wrote in a caption accompanying the post.

Spanish news outlet El Pais reported that the fire broke out on Friday, prompting thousands of people to evacuate parts of Malaga by Saturday.

The Forest Fire Extinction Service of Andalusia said on Saturday that the fire covered 1,890 hectares. Firefighting efforts were made more difficult by high temperatures and low humidity in the area, the agency said. Credit: Alberto Garcia via Storyful
