Smoke in the sky: Naples Botanical Garden conducting a controlled burn to promote growth

Seeing smoke coming from Naples Botanical Garden? No need to worry.

The garden is conducting a controlled burn today to encourage new growth.

"Fire is a critical land management tool in Florida that encourages the growth of new plants, promotes seed sprouting, and, critically, reduces accumulated plant matter that could fuel a wildfire," Naples Botanical Garden staff wrote in a press release. "The Garden began reintroducing fire to its natural areas earlier this year, working with a certified burn manager, his staff, and land managers from neighboring conservation organizations."

The burn began this morning (Dec. 19) and staff are monitoring the area to ensure the fire stays contained and safe.

The garden is maintaining normal hours today, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Johnsonville Night Lights will take place as planned. The Lake Trail and Preserve will be closed because of the burn.

Garden staff say smoke in the area should be minimal due to the wind's direction today.
