Smokey Grey uniforms are back for Tennessee Vols football for first time since 2017

Tennessee football is bringing back its Smokey Grey uniforms, and they’re here to stay for a while.

On Thursday, UT announced it will don the alternate look this season for the first time since 2017. The specific game has not been announced.

Nike Smokey Grey merchandise, including jerseys and exclusive gear, will be available this season at shop.UTsports.com and local stores.

But there’s more.

The Vols are launching a Smokey Grey series, wearing a version of the uniforms in each of the next four seasons.

This year’s look will be identical to the Nike Smokey Greys they last wore in a loss to Georgia in 2017. Designs for the next three seasons have not been created yet.

UT, of course, is associated with its classic orange and white uniforms and the iconic checkerboard pattern.

The Smokey Greys feature a two-toned grey jersey with orange numerals and grey pants with an orange stripe and checkerboard pattern. The helmet is also grey with an orange Power T, a silhouette of the Smoky Mountains and an orange and white checkerboard on the lower back.

UT debuted Smokey Grey uniforms in 2013, but that was the Adidas version that yielded losses to Georgia and Vanderbilt. They were relaunched in 2015 with a new Nike design that drew better results.

The Vols wore the Nike Smokey Grey uniform in a pair of 21-point comeback wins over Georgia in 2015 and Florida in 2016. They donned them again to beat Nebraska in the 2016 Music City Bowl, when Derek Barnett broke Reggie White’s UT career sack record.

UT last wore the Smokey Greys in a 41-0 loss to Georgia on Sept. 30, 2017, in Butch Jones’ final season. Now they’re back for Josh Heupel’s second season, which kicks off Sept. 1 (7 p.m. ET, SEC Network) against Ball State.
