Smooth Canyon Fire ignites in Gunnison

GUNNISON, Colo. (KREX) — GMUG Fire personnel are monitoring a new wildfire burning in Gunnison, Colorado.

Witnesses reported the Smooth Canyon Fire in the West Elk Wilderness this Thursday morning at around 11 a.m. The fire is burning about 5 miles north northeast of Big Soap Park and 21 miles northwest of Gunnison, Colorado.

According to GMUG Fire, the fire is currently 1.5 acres in size and zero percent contained, but fire experts believe the fire has low spread potential, with fire behavior primarily creeping and smoldering. The blaze is in a remote area, so fire crews area monitoring the blaze via aircraft.

No structures are threatened at this time, but officials advise smoke and haze may be seen in the surrounding area into the weekend.
