There's been a lotttt of talk about plastic straws in the last year. From companies like Starbucks and Disney to entire cities and states (Seattle, California), dozens of institutions have committed to cutting down plastic straw use in the next few years. But when all of the commitments started pouring in last summer, few companies actually knew what exactly the alternative would be.

Bananas Smoothies & Frozen Yogurt, a fast-casual chain with 30+ locations nationwide, has come up with one option: carrot straws! No, this is not a belated April Fool's joke. Per a press release, Bananas is in the testing and planning phase of using hollowed-out carrots in place of plastic straws—a move that actually doesn't seem so weird when it's put in a smoothie or fresh juice.

"We’ve started testing a prototype for a carrot straw in the hopes that one day we may be able to serve all our nutritious juices, smoothies and more with a healthy, edible, and ultimately environmentally-friendly straw option nationwide," COO of Villa Restaurant Group Andrew Steinberg said.

The straw is (obviously) edible and compostable and could actually hold up given its texture. While it's not in stores yet, it could be soon...which begs the question, what other edible straws could actually work? Pirouettes in coffee drinks? Twizzlers in milkshakes? A super thin, crunchy churro in hot chocolate? Time will tell! In the meantime, buy some reusable metal straws. It's time.
