Students at Sturgis Middle School Monday gave a presentation Monday to Sturgis Public Schools Board of Education at its meeting, held at the school.

Complete with a master of ceremonies, the presentation touched on a number of activities happening at the middle school. Students had a coffee cart available to offer beverages to those in attendance.

Topics included:

  • Announcements team

  • MITES competition

  • Woodshop

  • Peer to Peer

  • SMS Art & Art Club

  • Yearbook class

  • Lighthouse team (including concessions, dress-up days, décor, Wall School Peer Project and Harmony’s Puppy Project)

  • Teacher-student volleyball match

Administrators and board members were impressed by the student-led presentation. Assistant superintendent Nicole Gittinger thanked middle school principal Jimmy Lamb for allowing the students to lead.

“Thanks for letting kids have a voice,” she said. “They showed us that they can do it. They were respectful and knew what was right for them. Thank you for trusting them.”

Lamb said the showcase was just a sample of activities happening at SMS.

“I really truly believe we have some great things going on here at SMS,” he said. “And we have some great students.”

The board also approved St. Joseph County Intermediate School District’s general fund budget and a stock bus purchase for the 2022-23 academic year.

Also on Monday, "Trojan Heroes" for May were honored: Brian Barry (SMS teacher), Ben Currier (Enviro-Clean contract manager) and Darlene Netke (GSRP teacher).
