New SMS two-mile relay record set on Monday

A new Sturgis Middle School record was set in the two-mile relay on Monday.

The team of Berkley Holtz, Tessa Hatt, Sydney Bir and Eleanor Park set the new mark of 10:54.7 at Vicksburg. That run was good for first place. The previous record of 10:59.4 and was held by Amberlee McKerchie, Ann Marie Arseneau, Mary Boyd and Kelsey Keyser set in 2007.

For the evening, the Sturgis girls beat Hillside 60-49 and tied Gull Lake 55-55. The Trojans lost to Vicksburg 56-53. The Sturgis boys dropped all three matchups to Hillside 63-47, Gull Lake 63-47 and Vicksburg 77-33.

The Sturgis girls also won the mile relay. Bir, Myah Burkey, Hatt and Kenzie Eicher ran a time of 4:37.0 in that race.

Eicher also won the long jump, leaping 11-11. Eicher also won the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.6 seconds.

Burkey took third place in the high jump at 4-0, Baylea Snyder finished fifth in the high jump.

In the 400 relay, Sturgis placed fourth. The team of Ava Albarran, Paige Miller, Juliet Mendoza Rangel and Jade Munoz ran a time of 1:02.6 in that race. The 800 relay team finished fifth overall. Ava Albarran, Ainsley Gump, Miller and Munoz posted a time of 2:12.5 to finish that race.

Mendoza Rangel placed third in the 200 hurdles with a time of 36.7 seconds. She was also third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 20.4 seconds.

Holtz won the 800 (2:47.1) and the mile run at 5:52 for Sturgis. Park finished second overall in the 800 with a time of 3:07, Olivia Green ran to third place in that one at 3:13.

Green finished second in the mile run with a time of 6:33. Park was fourth with a time of 6:39.

Bir placed second overall in the 400 run with a time of 1:07. Green finished fifth overall with a time of 1:20.7.

For the boys, Kaicee Kyle won both spring races. He posted a time of 12.0 seconds to win the 100 dash, he ran a time of 25.0 seconds to win the 200. Aiden Gorham came in fifth place in the 100 at 12.8 seconds. He was second in the 200 meters with a time of 26.4 seconds. Running to fifth in the 200 was Dane VanNest at 27.8 seconds.

Wyatt Miller’s time of 59.2 seconds was good for second place in the 400. Gorham placed fourth in that one at 1:01.7.

Julien Lambright, Henry Ebert, Caleb Hohn and Ian Johnson ran a time of 57.9 seconds in the 400 relay, good for fourth place. The 800 relay team consisting of the same four runners had a time of 2:01.7 to place fourth.

The mile relay team was third. Alan Montoya, Miller, VanNest and Drayk Lampe had a time of 4:29 in that event. The two-mile relay team of Joel Smith, Roy VanderHulst, Darren Speelman and Montoya came in fourth with a time of 11:08.9.

Gavan Miller had a distance of 31-8 for fifth place in the shot put.

VanderHulst placed second in the high jump at 4-10.

Kyle leaped 16-3 for third place in the long jump, Miller was fourth at 15-7.
