Smyrna RB/LB Arion Carter commits to Memphis football

Memphis added another commitment from Middle Tennessee as Smyrna High School running back/linebacker Arion Carter announced his decision Wednesday.

Carter, who is 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, rushed for 962 yards and 16 touchdowns for Smyrna last season in eight games. He's also a three-sport standout who plays basketball and competed in the 300-meter hurdles during last year's state track and field championships.

Carter is unranked by 247Sports and the second Smyrna recruit to commit to Memphis. Defensive lineman Jayden Marable committed to the Tigers in June.

Per his Twitter page, Carter was offered by Memphis on June 17 and also has offers from Charlotte, Arkansas State and Navy among others.

If Carter stays at running back, he enters a crowded room with only one fifth-year senior and seniors Rodrigues Clark and Asa Martin eligible for one more season. But by tagging linebacker coach Jordon Hankins in his commitment tweet, it's possible Carter's future is on defense.

Seniors Xavier Cullens and Tyler Murray will be gone after this season. In addition to junior Geoffrey-Cantin Arku, the Tigers have mostly young linebackers including sophomores Davian Mayo and Bryce Edmondson along with sophomore transfer Warren Peeples.

Memphis has 16 commitments for its 2023 class.
